Cloontagh School was built in 1938 and opened in 1939. It began as a two teacher school with Danny Doherty (Master Danny) and Mrs Acheson. Master Danny was principal until 1976 and, after his retirement, was replaced by Oliver Gilmore. Mr Gilmore was principal until 1996. He got a job as principal of Rasheney School and was replaced in Cloontagh by Mrs Eibhlin Mc Cracken. Mrs Mc Cracken remained as principal in Cloontagh until her retirement in 2018, She was replaced by Mrs Grace Mc Carron. The school began as a two classroom school and the third classroom was built in. While this classroom was being built the children were taught in two houses in Cloontagh. At this stage Fr Sweeney taught in the school. The next renovations in the school took place in when we got 4 new classrooms. The old part of the building was converted into a staff room, a hall and an office.
